First Full Day in Oaxaca

Woke up around 7:30 am to Max building legos in the living room.  Kaya was quick to make her bed - an unusual thing for her - she is taking this nesting thing seriously.  Because we had to give Senora Maria the complete month's rent (which we expected but left us with nothing to get food with), our first mission in the morning was to go get money from the ATM down the road - and luckily we had success. Had plenty of sandwiches and snacks to tie us over.

The apartment is part of a large courtyard filled with hundreds of plants. Outside the apt. narrow old streets with no obvious pedestrian rights- have to keep a tight hand on Max. First explored giant plaza about 6 blocks away and then searched for breakfast. Here it includes hot chocolate and a sweet cake. Not a lot of teeth left on many of these folks. Sat in the middle of a bustling covered market for some hot soup, sweet bread and hot chocolate. Although the server/owner Laurita told me carefully how much each dish/ drink cost, in the end the total was entirely too much money which I happily handed over (not going to argue on day one when I've been completely swindled) On the way home, had to step over a naked loco sleeping across the sidewalk. That was interesting. Generally though, streets are clean and colorful. Kelsey is a fun companion, curiously looking and asking about everything.

Came back to the apt. for a little rest (M protesting the walking) and now ready for adventure #2: supermarket (S and I love this part). Need to stock up on toilet paper, soap, oatmeal (the sweet breads and hot chocolate every morning will not do for us, I'm afraid) and lunch fixings. We'll sample a little local fare for dinner for now until we get bolder and pick up a chicken or something manana. Our little kitchen is equipped with pots and all so mostly we'll be eating here.

Dona Maria's dog, Ramses, a big golden lab, is quickly becoming a friend- in the house now, lying on the floor. Everyone else up on the roof deck garden (no railings- so off limits to K & M without us)

We took a walk to the supermarket to stock up on essentials - coffee for Abby! It was a fun experience walking around the Super Walmart-like Chandaui maket.  We walked back with groceries in hand and crashed for a bit.  We are all a bit overheated and tired.  The weather has been pretty good.  Moderately warm days with partly cloudy skies, probably in the low- to mid-80s.  Nights are cool and breezy in the low 60s or so.  Abby had to shut the windows and retrieve the extra blanket last night!  Kelsey took a snooze and the kids read and played a bit until our next adventure which was to get some fruits and vegetables from the main market in the center of town.  We explored the labyrinth like market taking in the sights, smells, and sounds.  Kaya did all the vegetable purchases (we make her do this to practice her Spanish and she seems not to mind).  We wandered around and asked lots of questions about what things were - big piles of cocoa beans - even white ones.  Lots of interesting goodies for sale.

From there we headed to the main square (Zocalo) to let the kids run around a bit.  It rained while we were in the mercado, so the kids got to run around in the puddles.  We got some elotes topped with mayonaise, lime juice, salt, cheese, and chili powder.  Kids loved them.  We headed back home to rest a bit and then to a local restaurant for dinner.  OK but not great.  We have yet to get really good food, but we will continue our hunt.

Kids and Kelsey are asleep.  We are heading that way.

More manana...
